The story of Flesh Wounds
While waiting to start drawing a comic adaptation of H.G. Wells’ Time Machine, I started work on a 2 page short story called “permanent alterations.” This story was about tattooed people and the attitudes they encounter from an untattooed world.

When Franz Henkel saw it, he was interested in using it as the concept for an 8 page story to be published in an adult horror anthology comicbook. I drew 8 pages for a story called “Surfacewounds”, which later became “Flesh Wounds,” and continued waiting for the Time Machine project to happen.

It never did. In the world of comics, several projects need to be simultaneously making the rounds with publishers in order to yield one good job. With the Time Machine dead, I began working on a porno comic called “Bambi and Friends”, and looking around for new jobs.

Both Franz and I used “Flesh Wounds”, as sample pages to get work. Somehow a sample copy made its way to Kevin Eastman at Tundra. “Flesh Wounds”, was picked up, but as a 24 page book. We redid the entire book – now 3 times the size of the original – which was good for me since I got paid by the page. At this time I began getting more tattoos. One day, Darren Rosa asked if I would apprentice under him. I accepted, and began learning the ancient art of tattooing on weekends, while drawing “Flesh Wounds”, the rest of the week. Eventually, over the next couple of years, the book grew to 72 pages and my tattooing began to take shape.

Unfortunately, Tundra went under and my book, now done, was in limbo. Luckily, Kevin bought Heavy Metal magazine and took “Flesh Wounds”, with him.

It took years filled with many disappointments and hardships to see “Flesh Wounds,” printed, but finally I held it in my hand. I’m happy that the creation of the book coincided with my learning to tattoo. They were both painful experiences that changed my life for the better.
