The rehabilitation of an old or poorly done tattoo is done by either a coverup or a reworking.
A rework involves re-inking the whole tattoo rather than just adding spot color to compensate
for any color that has faded with age. The reason for this is that solely adding spots of
color to brighten an old tattoo will make it look like an old tattoo that has had a bit
of new color added. Redoing the entire outline along with coloring the rest of the tattoo
is recommended because it improves the tattoo for the long run.
A coverup involves tattooing over the old tattoo while camouflaging and working the
old tattoo into a new design. Coverup tattoos are usually much larger than the original
piece due to the amount of work it takes to work the old design into a new one.
